May is Mental Health Awareness Month...
As I approached the topic of Mental Health Awareness I struggled with what to write, as Mental Health is many things. To many comes the question: What is Mental Health? Mental Health is the simple and yet complex term used to describe the human experience of emotions and how we cope with our life circumstances. Mental Health very much seems like everything, as it includes depression, anxiety, eating disorders, personality disorders, developmental issues, substance use, coping skills and our self-expression of how we cope with all things. Just to name a few specific mental health awareness issues. In order to express the awareness that is the concept of gaining insight from your personal life journey.
My life circumstances and journey has continued to build my heart full of compassion for those that struggle: struggle with their emotions, struggle to ask for help, and struggle to seek help. I became a counselor as I myself struggled with depression as a young teenager and struggled to find help to deal with my sadness. I vowed to become the help to others that I was unable to find early on in my life. Through my journey to help others I discovered my personal strengths: I am stronger than I thought, I have a heart to help, when I help others my sadness decreases and my heart grows. I have found my passion for life in helping others and I have continual challenged myself to help. As I have challenged myself I need to be aware of my personal struggles so that I can be me, take time to care for myself so that I am fully capable of helping others. My mental health challenge is to manage my coping skills, take time to express myself, ask for help when needed, and enjoy the journey of life without getting lost in the worries or unexpected turns that happen.
Although depression seems to be an easily defined aspect of mental health there are many more complex issues associated with mental health that expand the human experience from emotions, thought processes, substance use, personality types, developmental issues, to varied coping skills. Each of us has our own story that continues to unfold and as we walk through life we learn lessons at each turn. It is important to go through the struggle to see the strength at the end; traverese the tunnel and find the light at the end. I challenge each of you to take your opportunities, ask for help when needed, change, learn, grow, and recognize the strength within yourself to express your mental health to the world.

Eating Disorders are often hidden in the veil of mental health disorders (anxiety, depression, mood disorders, post-traumatic stress, or substance use disorders) as it is more acceptable to discuss mental health or substance use than it is to reveal the eating disorder. Eating disorders often start as a way to adapt and survive various struggles in ones life; unfortunately, the eating disorder can take over ones life and often results in a beautiful life cut short. I want to break the silence. It's time to talk about eating disorders. Get rid of the secret that holds you captive. Begin with a screening, talk to someone you trust, discover life again, recognize your personal strengths, create a newer more beautiful you free to live life without the constant preoccupation of weight, thinness, beauty ideals that do not address the you inside. OUR HEART, SOUL AND MIND DETERMINE OUR BEAUTY NOT OUR SHAPE OR APPEARANCE. IT'S TIME TO LET YOUR SOUL SHINE!!!!
